Rocketman, the Elton John biopic, fails on lift-off

Image copyright Paramount Pictures Image caption Jamie Bell plays Sir Elton’s songwriting partner Bernie Taupin We go from addiction story to back story for a while until the two become one and everything that was good about the film (warmth, self-deprecating humour, seamless segues between music, action and time) is lost in yet another scene of Elton Hercules John overindulging. It’s a rock ‘n’ roll cliché at the best of times, but is overplayed here to such an extent as to suggest (ridiculously) it is the only interesting thing to say or reveal about a sensitive, artistic man blessed with a special talent to touch the hearts and minds of millions of people across the globe. It’s a shame, because …

What Online Chess Taught One Teen About Digital Life

A few weeks ago, I was out to breakfast with a bunch of my guy friends and my boyfriend, crammed into a leather booth at Orphan Andy's, a diner a couple miles from where I live. We were off school that day, and one of my friends had a recurring dream about pancakes, so there we were. Per usual, I was vaguely annoyed by the omnipresent phone-checking of my friends, though this time it was accompanied by lighthearted banter of the “You dumbass, I'm going to beat you” sort, which oddly made me feel better. “What could possibly be so interesting?” I asked. This was met with a bombardment of mock disgust and the commandment to download Chess Time or …

Catch-22 review George Clooney’s dizzying, daring triumph

The actor-directors visually impressive adaptation of Joseph Hellers second world war novel is a violent, frenetic and disquieting small-screen satire Theres a moment late in Catch-22, as a second world war bomber returns from a mission over Italy, that I realized planes can land with their engines on fire. The plane, smoke trailing its left engine, wobbles to the runway, which seems ridiculous if the fire is literally at hand, how can it just land normally? But apparently, thats the way it is. That shot extraordinary treated as normal, routine marred but not upended by disaster captures, like many others, the pendulum of contrasts in Catch-22, Hulus limited series adaptation of Joseph Hellers canonical 1961 novel. Executive produced and part-directed …

Sex, money and idiots in power: Restoration comedy’s endless appeal

These late 17th-century plays with their sea of unfamiliar words can be daunting for actors. But this disillusioned world speaks to our own age of uncertainty Its the most terrified Ive ever been on stage, Justine Mitchell says flatly. The Irish actor shudders at the thought of the elegant romcoms of the Restoration. She has triumphed over all kinds of dramatic challenges Russian epics, Trump-era satire but shes not alone in her uneasiness. Everyone I speak to admits to an apprehensive frisson in approaching plays from the foptastic, periwigalicious world of the late 17th century. Restoration plays come from the reign of Charles II and his immediate successors (roughly 1660-1710). In the wrenching aftermath of Britains civil wars and of …

Why YouTubes Beauty Wars Arent About Makeup

Beauty product reviews on YouTube aren’t just about beauty products and internet capitalism. They’re a conduit for drama, loyalty politics, and “cancel culture," as WIRED’s Emma Grey Ellis has learned throughout her reporting on some of YouTube’s biggest names. This week’s drama is on James Charles, a hugely popular 19-year-old beauty influencer, and Tati Westbrook, an OG YouTube beauty guru and a mentor of Charles. Coachella and hair vitamins were involved. Charles was cancelled (again). But as Ellis writes, “The real victims of cancel culture might be the rest of us, perpetually required to join the angry mob lest ye be taken for a collaborator.” We talk about this and more on this week’s Gadget Lab podcast.

Hollywoods Dark Horse Pick Is a White Guy Named Steve

The Dude has found his man. Hes a good man and a great leader, said Academy Award-winning actor Jeff Bridges, describing his good friend Steve Bullock in a statement to The Daily Beast. Bullock, the governor of Montana, announced his bid for the 2020 nomination on Tuesday and has pitched himself as the only Democrat in a field of nearly two dozen contenders who has won twice in Trump country. While his campaign is less than 48 hours old, it is becoming something of a cattle call for Hollywood actors, producers, and talent managers who want to see their candidate plucked out of obscurity. For Bridges, Bullock is a natural choice. The actor was active on the governors 2016 re-election …

5 Things Men Need To Stop Doing In Bed Betches

Ever since I was old enough to subscribe to women’s magazines, I have had mixed feelings about them. While I am a believer in self-improvement, the barrage of articles telling me I should change or improve some aspect of myself made me feel inadequate. Never was this feeling more acute than after reading the sex tips offered by these magazines. I thought I was doing just fine in this area and had never received a bad review, but if these magazines were to be believed, I would need to stand on my head and breathe through my nose while blindfolded in order to really impress in the bedroom. I’m all for keeping things exciting, especially in the context of a …

Country Music Star Travis Tritt Involved In Fatal DUI Accident – Perez Hilton

Country music legend Travis Tritt‘s tour bus was side swiped in the middle of a fatal DUI accident outside Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Friday night. According to Tritt’s own Twitter account, the singer and his band had just gotten done with a show in Myrtle Beach and were leaving on Veteran’s Highway outside of town, when they were sideswiped during a massive crash involving a driver going the wrong way on the highway. According to Tritt, at least two people were dead as a result of the accident — and though his tour bus full of people was fine (the vehicle itself sustained some damage), the country legend was understandably extremely shaken up by the entire incident. He reported the events …

TikTok tops the iOS App Store for the fifth quarter in a row

Despite a $5.7 million FTC fine and changes to restrict its use by those younger than 13 years old, TikTok retained its No. 1 position as the most downloaded app on the Apple App Store for the fifth consecutive quarter, according to a new report from Sensor Tower. The app saw more than 33 million App Store downloads during Q1, and was followed by YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger to round out the top five. The No. 16 top app, Twitter, also had a good quarter, the report noted. With 11.7 million App Store downloads, it saw its biggest quarter in terms of downloads since Q1 2015 — and a year-over-year increase of 3.6%. Of course, these figures won’t necessarily …
